Jul 19, 2018

VARZANEH, Iran — The small group of Iranian farmers gathered around their tractors — long idle, parked at the town entrance next to a canal that once irrigated their fields but has been dry for years — and they protested, pleading for help from the government. "We are the people," shouted Mostafa Benvidi. "Help the people. At night they go to bed hungry!" They held signs addressing officials they blame for their dried-up fields. "How long will you eat your bread made with our blood?" one sign read. Every day, farmers hold their small protest outside Varzaneh. It's a sign...

Study: National parks get fewer visits when pollution rises

Jul 19, 2018

DENVER — Visitors appear to be steering clear of some U.S. national parks or cutting visits short because of pollution levels that are comparable to what's found in major cities, according to a study released Wednesday. Researchers at Iowa State and Cornell universities looked at more than two decades of data on ozone pollution at 33 parks — from Shenandoah to Yellowstone, the Grand Canyon and Yosemite. They say visitor numbers dropped almost 2 percent when ozone levels went up even slightly and by at least 8 percent in months with three or more days of high ozone levels compared...

AmEx 2Q profit rises, but there are worry spots on lending

Jul 19, 2018

NEW YORK — American Express said Wednesday that its second-quarter profit rose 21 percent from a year ago, as the credit card giant saw more customers spending on its namesake cards and a much lower tax rate. But it had to set aside more money to cover potential bad loans, and saw its delinquency rate rise noticeably. It's a potential sign that some of American Express' customers — typically the most creditworthy in the industry — are struggling to pay their bills. Shares of American Express fell 3 percent in after-market trading. The New York-based company said it had second-quarter...
