UK's May gathers divided Cabinet, seeking Brexit compromise

Feb 22, 2018

LONDON — British Prime Minister Theresa May was gathering her divided ministers Thursday for a marathon meeting aimed at hammering out a common position on Brexit. May's "inner Cabinet" was due to meet through the afternoon and evening at Chequers, the prime minister's country retreat outside London. The Conservative government is divided between supporters of "hard Brexit," who want a clean break with the EU so Britain can strike new trade deals around the world, and those seeking closer ties to soften the economic shock of leaving. The first group includes Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson and International Trade Secretary Liam...

China probing possible violation of UN sanctions on N. Korea

Feb 22, 2018

BEIJING — China is "highly concerned" about a reported ship-to-ship transfer on the high seas that could violate U.N. sanctions on North Korea and has launched an investigation, the foreign ministry said Thursday. Spokesman Geng Shuang said China would "seriously deal" with any Chinese individuals or enterprises found to be involved in the incident reported earlier this week by Japan. "China is highly concerned about the situation and we are in the middle of an investigation," Geng said at a regularly scheduled news conference. Punishment of any Chinese entities found to have been involved would be carried out "based on...

German business confidence drops amid global, local concerns

Feb 22, 2018

BERLIN — German business confidence dropped sharply in February amid increasing concerns about both domestic and international risks. The Munich-based Ifo Institute said Thursday its business climate indicator fell to 115.4 points in February from 117.6 in January, while noting it remained near historic highs. ING economist Carsten Brzeski says the figures show concerns about "market turmoil, the political impasse in Berlin and new fears of a protectionist wave from the U.S. as well as the U.S. tax reform" are beginning to take their toll. Despite the risks, he says "the economy should maintain its strong momentum." He says company's...

Book Trump? Interest groups press case at his properties

Feb 22, 2018

WASHINGTON — Payday lenders got regulators to rethink rules on how closely to vet borrowers. E-cigarette makers got a delay in federal oversight of many vaping products. Candy makers praised a decision to hold off on more stringent labeling standards. And title insurers declared "victory" for getting changes that benefited them in the tax overhaul. What do all these American special-interest groups have in common? They were among those that booked meetings, retreats and conferences at hotels and golf resorts owned by President Donald Trump. While it's impossible to draw a direct link between where groups seeking to influence the...

UK growth in 2017 downgraded as consumer spending wanes

Feb 22, 2018

LONDON — The British economy did not grow as strongly as initially anticipated in the final quarter of 2017 amid a slowdown in consumption and business investment, official figures showed Thursday. The Office for National Statistics said the British economy expanded by a quarterly rate of 0.4 percent, down from the initial estimate of 0.5 percent. The downgrade is not huge but confirms that the economy cooled in 2017, the year after the country voted to leave the European Union. The statistics agency also lowered its 2017 growth estimate to 1.7 percent from the previous 1.8 percent. From being one...
